QMUL You Are A Scientist Workshop

Recently, our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils were delighted to welcome representatives from Queen Mary University of London back for a second round of engaging science workshops.

Following their first visit, where pupils explored what it means to be a scientist, the children were excited to discover a range of scientific careers through a series of hands-on activities led by Queen Mary Ambassadors.

Pupils rotated between three interactive stations. At the astronomy station, they learned about the work of astronomers and explored different types of galaxies, including spiral, elliptical and irregular galaxies.

In the chemistry workshop, pupils discovered that water is a chemical and investigated the properties of acids and alkalis. Working collaboratively, they used pH indicators to test a variety of liquids and identify whether they were acidic or alkaline.

One year 4 pupil during the experiment said, “I really liked seeing the colour of the liquid change when testing the PH.”

Meanwhile, at the sports technology station, pupils explored how scientific testing supports athletes. Using an infrared camera, they examined body heat patterns and investigated how different types of clothing affected heat retention. Through practical experiments, they learned the importance of carrying out fair and consistent tests.

The workshops provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience science in action. Throughout the sessions, they demonstrated enthusiasm, teamwork and a willingness to ask thoughtful questions, showcasing the excellent learning habits we encourage at Sir William Burrough.

This experience links particularly well to our value of Growth. By challenging themselves to learn new concepts, develop practical skills and think like scientists, pupils embraced opportunities to expand their knowledge and understanding.

Thank you to Queen Mary for yet another insightful experience for your young learners.
